1.negotiation n. 磋商;谈判
The 6-month negotiations between the two countries ended fruitlessly.
两国谈判半年一无所获。
Despite long-time negotiations, the two sides have failed to reach agreement.
双方虽进行了长时间的谈判,但还是未达成协议。
2.surround vt.
be closely associated with; be >与…紧密相关;围绕
There has been increasingly more reporting on issues surrounding domestic violence in the news media.
新闻媒体上有关家暴的报道日渐增多。
The decision had been agreed in principle before today's meeting, but some controversy surrounded it. 
在今天的会议之前该决定原则上已获同意,但围绕这项决定还存在一些争议。
3.work out
find the solution to (a problem or question) 想出、得到(解决方法)
It's important to work out a solution rather than engage in endless discussion.
想出对策比没完没了的空谈重要得多。
Negotiators are due to meet later today to work out a compromise. 
谈判者们预定在今天晚些时候会面,以找到一个折衷的办法。
4.presence n. 存在;到场
It's natural for a child to be chatting away in the presence of a loving parent.

The tension of the protesters grew with the presence of police.

5.extreme a.
(of views or actions) very different from what people accept as reasonable or normal 偏激的;过激的
Extreme views sometimes can become very popular.

8.primary a. main 主要的
The young man failed to see that the primary cause of his failure was his laziness and inaction.
那个年轻人不明白,其失败的主要原因是懒懒散散无所作为。
Our primary concern is to provide the refugees with food and health care.
我们的头等大事是向难民提供食品和医疗。
9.sacrifice n. 牺牲;舍弃
It is common for women to make lots of sacrifice for the family.

The downside of a self-driving car is the sacrifice of the pleasure of driving.

10.bonus n. 意外收获;红利,奖金
I received a box of cookies as a bonus when I bought coffee at a café yesterday.

12.devotion n. 奉献,全身心投入
The scientist who passed away last week was fondly remembered for his total devotion to science.

13.household n. the people of a house collectively 家庭

17.grateful a. thankful 感激的
The war refugees are very grateful to the local government for the timely help.

18.phase n. 阶段;时期
The minister claimed in his speech that the manufacturing industry was entering a very different phase with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence.

21.expectation n. 期望;预期
Chinese parents tend to have great expectations for the future of their children.

Hot money flew into China in the expectation of higher interest rates.

22.hono(u)r do what is required by a promise or a contract 信守;执行vt.

27.maintainv. keep in a certain state, position, or activity 维持;保持
