The United Nations on Wednesday granted Turkey's request to change its name from Turkey to Türkiye, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters.

报道称，迪雅里克说：“土耳其（Turkey）共和国已改名为Türkiye共和国。”他表示，此改变自土当局向联合国提出请求后立即生效。

The change came into force immediately at the time when the world body received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to the UN chief with a request to change the country's name, the spokesman said.

当地时间5月31日，土耳其外长恰武什奥卢在其社交媒体平台上发文称，当天他向联合国秘书长递交了一封信，请求将土耳其的外语国名改成“Türkiye”。

土耳其外交部长梅夫吕特·恰武什奥卢表示，决定更改国名是土耳其为“提升本国在国际舞台上的威望”而采取的措施之一。

Cavusoglu reportedly said that the change in the spelling was adopted as part of the steps aimed at increasing the country's prestige in the international arena.

2021年12月，土耳其开始在国内和国际场合上使用“Türkiye”作为其外语国名。

在土耳其语中，土耳其的名字就是“Türkiye”。在英语中，土耳其的名字是“Turkey”。而“turkey”一词在英语中有“火鸡”的意思，甚至在剑桥词典中被定义为“严重失败的东西”或“愚蠢的人”。
